The BTEC Plus is a course designed to help students to progress to a variety of courses at university. However, it teaches more than just the academic subjects you need for university. We teach students to think independently, plan their study time effectively and carry out independent research. Students will develop their ability to analyse and evaluate business situations skills and qualities that will stay with them and boost future careers.
What is BTEC Plus?
Your business course focuses on what you want to learn. All students take four core units which give them an introduction to and understanding of the business environment, management of resources, marketing and communication: all fundamental to the success of business organisations.
What will I study?
The course consists of 12 units that are assessed in-College by the tutors; there are no external exams. Students learn to research, give presentations, produce papers and projects, work in teams, develop their communication skills and study a wide range of business topics. There is feedback at the end of each unit, allowing students to develop a clear sense of how they are progressing.
The structure of the qualification allows a great deal of choice and flexibility. All students take four core units which introduce the fundamentals of business organisations:
- The Business Environment
- Business Resources
- Introduction to Marketing
- Business Communication
The other eight units come from a list of more specialist areas, including Finance, Management, Promotion, Market Research, Setting up a Small Business and Human Resources.
What will I gain from studying the subject?
With your qualification you can study a variety of subjects at leading UK and international universities. Recent BTEC Plus students have chosen to study Business at universities such as King’s College London, Surrey, Manchester and Liverpool, whilst others will be studying anthropology, politics, international relations, engineering, music management and fashion communication at a variety of universities, including UCL, Exeter, Royal Holloway and Reading.
Students at Oxford Tutorial College apply to UK universities through the UCAS process. We have a dedicated Higher Education and Progression Officer who can give the advice you need to make the best choice.
Universities in the UK make offers to students based on the qualifications being studied, each grade has a potential number of points. The university will make an offer based on the total points expected or on specific grades.
How is it assessed?
100% coursework. There are NO exams.
Each unit carries the same weight.

What do I need?
UK students ideally need 5 GCSEs grade C or above (or equivalent) including Maths and English. You will also need to have the motivation to work extremely hard and to meet all deadlines as this is a highly intensive course equivalent to 2 A levels in one year.
International students need at least 5.0 IELTS with 5.0 minimum in writing.
What is BTEC?
It is an internationally recognised qualification from the Edexcel exam board. It is equivalent to 2 A levels.
How long is the course?
It is a 1 year intensive course
Can I use a computer for the coursework?
Yes, all coursework is produced on a computer. Students are encouraged to bring in their own laptop.
Do I need Microsoft Office on my laptop?
Can I go to university with a BTEC?
Yes. For the top universities You will need one A level as well (e.g. For international students an A level in their own language). Some students do a one year A level course alongside their BTEC whilst others might continue their AS (from last year) to A2. Some students choose the BTEC if they have already completed A levels (or plan to retake them) in order to get extra UCAS points.
Can I only study business at university after this course?
No. There is a wide variety of degree courses open to you, e.g. Fashion, law, philosophy, politics etc
