BTEC Level 3 Business
The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is the vocational equivalent to one A Level and is taught over sixteen weeks and is available as a September and January start course.
The BTEC 120-credit Level 3 Business Diploma is the vocational equivalent to two A Levels and is available as a September start course taught over one academic year or a January start course taught over three academic terms.
The BTEC 180-credit Level 3 Business Extended Diploma is the vocational equivalent to three A Levels and is available to September start students and taught over two academic years as well as being available to January start students and is taught over five academic terms.
These courses provide a practical and theoretical introduction to business which will suit those who want the study of business to be a substantial or dominant part of their studies.
WHAT IS BTEC LEVEL 3 BUSINESS STUDIES?
BTEC Business qualiﬁcations have been developed in the business sector to provide students with the opportunity to enter employment in the business sector or to progress to university; provide students with the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The BTEC Level 3 Business Subsidiary Diploma consists of 6 units; the 120-credit Level 3 Business Diploma course consists of 12 units whilst the BTEC 180-credit Level 3 Business Extended Diploma consists of 18 units; there are no external exams. Students learn to research, give presentations, produce papers and projects, work in teams, develop their communication skills and study a wide range of business topics. There is feedback at the end of each unit, allowing students to develop a clear sense of how they are progressing.
The structure of the qualification allows a great deal of choice and flexibility. All students take four core units which introduce the fundamentals of business organisations:
- The Business Environment
- Business Resources
- Introduction to Marketing
- Business Communication
The other units come from a list of more specialist areas, including Finance, Management, Promotion, Market Research, Setting up a Small Business and Human Resources.
HOW IS IT ASSESSED?
100% coursework. There are NO exams.
Each unit carries the same weight.

WHAT DO I NEED?
5 GCSEs grade C or above including Maths and English or international qualifications equivalent to GCSE or above. However there is the opportunity to retake Maths or English GCSE if you have not achieved it. Most importantly you must have the motivation to work extremely hard and to meet all deadlines as these are highly intensive courses particularly the BTEC 120-credit Level 3 Business Diploma taught over over one academic year or three academic terms.
Q: What is BTEC?
A: It is an internationally recognised qualification from the Edexcel exam board that is respected and accepted by UK employers and universities.
Q: How long is the course?
A: From the subsidiary course of 16 weeks to the extended diploma of two academic years, the course length depends on your choice of programme.
Q: Can I use a computer for the coursework?
A: Yes, all coursework is produced on a computer. Students are encouraged to bring in their own laptop.
Q: Do I need Microsoft Office on my laptop?
Q: Can I go to university with a BTEC?
A: Yes. For some universities and for some degree courses you will need one A Level alongside the BTEC Level 3 Business Diploma and most students study a one year A Level subject alongside their BTEC Level 3 Business Diploma. However, many universities will accept the BTEC Level 3 Business Extended Diploma on its own with no requirement for an additional A Level. Some students choose to study the BTEC Business Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma having already completed A levels in order to gain extra UCAS points or as an alternative to retaking an A Level they have wish to retake.
Q: Can I only study business at university after this course?
A: No. A wide variety of degree courses remain open to you particularly if you choose a certain A Level subject to study alongside the BTEC Level 3 Business Diploma.
