A-Level Business

EDUQAS (WJEC) A-Level Business is taught within the two-year and five-term A-level programmes.

Business is taught in small groups and students are encouraged to build up a good practical and theoretical understanding of business which they apply to specific questions and case studies. Management, market performance, operational issues and human resources are all assessed. Emphasis is also placed in understanding strategic direction and decision making and the issues involved in pursuing new strategies and approaches. In the final examinations, students are assessed through multiple choice questions, extended answers and structured questions. They also use stimulus materials to undertake a case study.

In A-Level Business, students study businesses in a variety of contexts looking at large and small businesses, global and local and service and manufacturing businesses. Throughout the course students are taught how to understand the context of decision making, the interrelated nature of business activities and the competitive environment. They also assess the factors behind decisions and what make these succeed to fail. In a changing world, students also consider the impact of technology and the effects of business on the environment and how these impact business decision-making. Students are also made aware both of day to day decisions in business and broader strategic decisions and the differing bases for both of these.

Exam Board: EDUQAS (WJEC) 

5 GCSEs grade 5 or above including Maths and English or equivalent international qualifications.

For international students who have taken IELTS, we require an overall score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 for each of the reading and writing components.

For international students who have taken IGCSE English (Second Language), we require grade 5 or above.

Students do not need to have studied Business before but need to have an interest in the workings of business. There are some calculations involved and the need to interpret and present data, so sound Mathematical skills are very helpful. Knowledge of the workings of a business are built up during the course.

Business can be combined with virtually any subject as it broadens the options of students. Those wishing to pursue a career in Science, Arts or other areas can gain through a practical understanding of the business context and many students find that the broad skill of business allow them to widen their skill set.

Is it possible to study A-Level Business and A-Level Economics together as two of my three A-Level subjects?

Yes, but some Russell Group universities have a preference for economics whilst other Russell Group universities discourage students from studying both business and economics together as A-Levels.

Is it possible to study A-Level Business in one year? 

No. If Business is a new subject to you and you wish to study the subject in one year, we recommend that you study the College’s one year BTEC Level 3 Business Diploma (equivalent to two A-Levels).
